Ocean Technology Sector

Newfoundland and Labrador is home to more than 50 knowledge intensive enterprises that develop ocean technology products and services. The province's ocean sector is also a significant contributor to the provincial economy with 16% annual growth over the past three years. Local advantages include international companies with established products and services; international collaborative commercial and scientific relationships; educated, motivated and stable professional and technical workforce; and extensive research capabilities and infrastructure.

The department supports the sector by:

  • Working on development and promotion initiatives with key stakeholders including: Oceans Advance, Memorial University, the Marine Institute, the City of St. John's, C-CORE, as well as the federal government, including NRC Institute for Ocean Technology, NRC Industrial Assistance Research Program, Industry Canada, and ACOA.
  • Supporting local companies to participate in trade shows and conferences
  • Partnering with other agencies to assist firms
  • Funding programs
