Trade Development Highlights...

In November 2011, the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development led a multi-sector trade development mission to Ireland. The delegation included Boulder Publications, Green Seafoods, and Versus Technologies. The mission provided delegates the opportunity to meet with key industry representatives to learn more about the market, identify business opportunities, and attend a business networking session with members of the South Dublin Chamber of Commerce.

Boulder Publications participated in the mission to help Irish publisher The O'Brien Press launch a foreign edition of the Boulder Publications book The Big Hop: The North Atlantic Air Race. In addition, they met with several Irish publishers with the goal of acquiring Canadian publication rights to more Irish books, as well as selling foreign rights to more of Boulder's books.

As a result of this mission, Boulder Publications acquired Canadian publication rights to one Irish book to be released in spring 2012.

Boulder Publications president Gavin Will said “It became apparent that opportunities exist to establish future publishing initiatives involving Boulder and one or more Irish companies. Boulder Publications is interested in projects that strengthen the cultural and business relationships that already exist between Ireland and Newfoundland and Labrador.”

The Department is welcoming expressions of interest for its next trade development mission to Ireland in spring 2012. Please contact Tonya Norman at (709) 729-3641 for more information.

Trade Links: Helping Youth Businesses Grow Beyond the Local Market

Contact: Chris Percy, (709) 729-5632.

Community Business Development Corporations, in conjunction with Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, and Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, are working with youth businesses to help them grow beyond their local markets through the development of Trade Links.

Trade Links…

  • goal is to help youth businesses expand beyond their current borders;
  • is focused on working one-on-one with a small group of youth business owners who have the capability to expand and be sustainable;
  • will work with economic development organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador to identify youth businesses with export potential;
  • will benefit the businesses and the communities in which they operate; and
  • will contribute to entrepreneurship.

How does it work?

Utilizing the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development’s Beyond Your Backyard – Export Readiness Program, successful applicants will complete an export diagnostic assessment that will identify the company’s overall export preparedness.

Based on the results of the diagnostic, a customized training program will be designed to specifically meet the needs of the individual business and its goals. Participation in the program will allow participants access to valuable export information, export specialists and mentors that will provide guidance and assistance in reaching their export objectives.
