Five-year Renewal of the Canada/Atlantic Provinces Agreement on International Business Development Announced

First established in 1994, the International Business Development Agreement (IBDA) provides a pool of resources from the four Atlantic Provinces and the Federal Government with the goal of stimulating international business development on a pan-Atlantic scale.  The mandate of IBDA is to help established exporters in Atlantic Canada expand their activities into new and more diversified markets, and to help new exporters get started.  Since its launch, it has helped companies target new opportunities in international markets such as Brazil, Panama, New England, and the United Kingdom.

The five-year renewal of the agreement was announced on August 16, 2011, along with a $10 million investment. Since the inception of IBDA, its funding has helped 200 Atlantic Canadian companies to start exporting, more than 300 exporting companies explore and enter new markets, and more than 450 others increase their sales and presence in existing markets.  From April 2005-March 2010 alone, 385 Newfoundland and Labrador-based companies and organizations participated in almost 90 IBDA funded projects.

With the new five-year agreement officially in place, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as local industry associations, will continue to promote and lead IBDA funded projects and initiatives, so look in future issues of TradeWaves for IBDA related opportunities.

Canada Signs Agreements with Brazil to Boost Bilateral Trade Relations

Brazil is one of the world’s strongest emerging markets, and is considered a priority region by the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development.

The Federal Government has recently signed a series of agreements with Brazil that will increase the flow of goods, services, and people between the two countries, and improve bilateral trade relations. These agreements are intended to boost Canada's competitiveness in the global economy and strengthen Canada's partnership with Brazil.

Additionally, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed that indicates that Canada will share its expertise in hosting the Olympics with Brazil, in preparation for the 2016 Summer Games being held in Rio de Janeiro. This MOU will mean business and investment opportunities for both Canadian and Brazilian companies.

For more information about market opportunities in Brazil, please contact Christopher Percy at (709) 729-5632.

Traditional & Emerging Markets

The Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development continues to focus on priority markets such as New England, Southeastern and Midwestern United States, Ireland, Panama, Iceland and Greenland.

New markets being explored include the United Kingdom, Brazil, China and India.
Did you know…

  • Brazil will be hosting the World Cup in 2012 and will spend $15 billion to upgrade infrastructure, accommodation and transportation. The cost of the country's 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro require an additional $14 billion of investment, with the majority of funds dedicated to urban transport, an urgent need for the city.
  • Canada and India have established the Canada-India Forum for Environmental Collaboration in order to work more closely together on key global environmental issues.
  • Atlantic Canadian exports to China totalled $1.2 billion in 2009. Top exports from Atlantic Canada to China included iron ore, zinc, crab, shrimp, antimony, and halibut.
  • The service sector in Ireland accounts for approximately half of its gross domestic product. Just under half of total Irish exports are services, and the country is in the top 10 worldwide for exports of commercial services. Throughout the last decade output of services has grown strongly, largely as a result of growth in financial services, telecommunications and tourism.

Please contact the department's trade officers for more information on these exciting markets.
